Vietnam will send 450 athletes to compete in 27 of the 42 sports scheduled to take place at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, from November 12-27. Athletes from the South East Asia regional powerhouse will compete in taekwondo, wushu, archery, athletics, billiards, snooker and others.
According to the ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to China, Nguyen Van Tho, the size of the delegation not only proves Vietnam’s dedication to sports development, but also acknowledges the importance of the relationship and cooperation between Vietnam and China.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China and is being celebrated as the "Year of Vietnam-China Friendship".
In January 2008, Vietnam helped to promote the Games by hosting the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Fun Run. Co-organised by the Vietnam Olympic Committee and the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee, the event attracted some 500 youngsters aged 9 to 15. Each runner received a limited edition T-shirt and cap, and a Certificate of Participation.
Ambassador Nguyen commented: “The Asian Games is an important event in the spiritual life of the Asian people. The world has the Olympic Games while our Asia has the Asian Games, which expresses the Olympic spirit with Asian characteristics."
