HKRFU, HKSO unite to share Olympic spirit

Date : 16 Mar 2010

To celebrate the inclusion of rugby sevens into the Olympic Games beginning in Rio in 2016, the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union’s sevens team held a first-of-its-kind rugby fitness activity with the Hong Kong Special Olympics national teams at King’s Park Sports Ground on Saturday, March 13. The Special Olympics teams came from athletics, rowing, swimming and table tennis.

Also in attendance were Karl Kwok, Vice President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; David Boyd-Thomas, regional head of community affairs for UBS, which sponsors the national teams of both sports organisations; Cecilia Wong, director of fundraising for the Hong Kong Special Olympics; Trevor Gregory, chairman of the HKRFU; and Robert Knight, executive director of the HKRFU.

As a means of thanking the HKSO for its support, the HKRFU extended an invitation to host the HKSO national team members to the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens on Friday, March 26.

Cecilia Wong of the HKSO commented: “We are very pleased to be involved in our first ever joint fitness activity with the HKRFU and thank UBS for this great opportunity. Our national team athletes really enjoyed the opportunity to try their hand at a new sport and they learned a lot about the game of rugby.

“I believe that the HKRFU’s national team players also learned a lot about the determination and resilience in the face of adversity that is a hallmark of a true champion from our national team members.”
