China take on Japan in final of Sudirman Cup

Date : 26 May 2019

Nanning, China, May 26, 2019: Ten-time champions China will meet Japan in the final of the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup on Sunday.

China’s big guns boomed as they marched imperiously into their 13th straight final of the World Mixed Team Championships with a clinical 3-0 rout of Thailand. The Chinese are one win away from reclaiming the title they lost at the last edition to Korea – which was only their second loss since 1993.

In the other semi-final, Japan defeated Indonesia 3-1 to stay on course for a first-ever title triumph at the Sudirman Cup.

China’s singles coach Xia Xuanze said: “It hasn’t been an easy journey to the final. I’m happy for all the players. The team is very young, most of them were born after 1996. I know they will give their all in the final.”

Chinese world number one mixed doubles pairing of Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong drew first blood with a 21-18, 21-7 victory over Thais Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

This was followed by Shi Yuqi defeating Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-15, 26-25 in the men’s singles. China wrapped up the semi-final with world champions Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen beating Tinn Isriyanet and Kittinupong Kedren 21-14, 21-17 in the men’s doubles.

Akane Yamaguchi and Kento Momota won their women’s and men’s singles matches, beating Gregoria Tunjung and Anthony Ginting in straight games respectively, to give Japan a 2-1 lead.

Indonesia’s men’s doubles pairing of Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo had earlier won the opening men’s doubles encounter defeating Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda 21-14, 21-18.

Japan wrapped up victory through their women’s doubles pair of Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara who overcame Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu 21-15, 21-17.

Japan’s head coach Park Joo-bong vowed his team would go all out against China in the final. “China are the toughest opponent. I think their play has been perfect but our players have also been improving and our target is the first-ever championship in the Sudirman Cup. We will go all out and try our best against China.”
