Male, Maldives, March 25, 2019: The Maldives Special Olympics team of four athletes returned home from Abu Dhabi after their huge success at the Special Olympics World Games 2019, winning one gold and one silver medal.
Shifna Ibrahim, who competed in the women’s 100m sprint in the new nations category, secured gold in a time of 18.01 seconds. Mariyam Noora, who was also representing Maldives in the 100m, finished fifth.
Meanwhile, Wasmee Waheed secured silver in the men’s 200m by clocking 27.25 seconds. Ali Ameen was fifth.
Maldivian athletes competed in the new nations category with athletes from 20 other countries.
The Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi was the largest sports and social inclusion event in the world where 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 200 nations competed in 24 Olympic-style sports.
