Kolkata, India, May 16, 2019: Celebrated Indian boxer Mary Kom will compete in her first event in the 51kg Olympic weight class when she takes part in the India Open tournament to be held at Guhawati from May 20-24.
Keeping the Olympics and the World Championships in mind, Mary Kom, who clinched her sixth World title in 48kg in New Delhi last year, will use the India Open as a preparatory event.
“I have been preparing for 51kg. I am ready to give my best and test myself ahead of the World Championships,” Kom said.
With 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualification around the corner, the India Open will witness 35 men and 37 women from India vying for glory alongside close to 200 pugilists from 16 boxing powerhouses taking part in the US$70,000 event.
The London Olympics bronze medalist had opted out of the Asian Championships last month in order to prepare for the World Championships which will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia from September 7-21.
