Nepal NOC President predicts bright future for MTB

Kathmandu, Nepal, March 29, 2019: The President of the South Asian Olympic Council and Nepal NOC, Member of Parliament Jeevan Ram Shrestha, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the 17th National Mountain Bike (MTB) and 9th Downhill Championship.

The event was held at the Rastriya Sahid Tatha Shanti Park at Gokarna, and 51 riders took part.

NOC President Shrestha said there was a bright future for mountain biking in Nepal and was sure the profile of the sport would grow as cycling is one of the sports for the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal this December 1-10.

“The view of cycling as a sport has developed a lot in Nepal and now, with cycling being included in the South Asian Federation Games 2019, the popularity of this sport will also bloom,” he said.

Rajiv Rai and Laxmi Magar won the titles of the 17th National MTB Cross Country Championship at the National Martyrs and Peace Park.

Rai finished the men’s 20km race in 1 hour and 31.32 seconds. Pratap Thapa was a close second in 1:31.39 and 0kwsh Bajracharya came third in 1: 34.03.

In the women’s section, Magar came first in 1 hour and 45.49 seconds while Sony Gurung was second in 1:51.57 and Humi Budha Magar third in 2:11.22.

Deepak Jimi won the junior section title and Harka Lama came first in the masters category.
