Nanning, China, May 21, 2019: Thailand booked their place in the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2019 quarter-finals on Tuesday thanks to a come-from-behind 3-2 win against Russia.
Mixed doubles combination Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai defeated Evgenij Dremin and Evgenia Dimova 21-10, 21-11 to complete Thailand’s comeback after they fell 2-1 behind.
That result ensured Thailand’s qualification for the last eight as Russia had earlier lost to top seeds Japan. The Japanese will face Thailand on Wednesday evening.
In the earlier session, Malaysia dodged India’s challenge to win 3-2 and sit pretty in their quest for a quarter-finals place.
Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean clinched the tie for Malaysia by beating Ashwini Ponnappa/Sikki Reddy 21-11, 21-19 in the fifth match after the teams were 2-2.
“It’s quite a big win,” said Lee Meng Yean. “We fought well as a team. It was 2-2 and important to win and our coach told us to enjoy our match.”
The Indians are now faced with the difficult task of beating China in the last group clash. An Indian upset would result in the three teams being equal on points, and the group qualifiers to be decided on countback.
Other big matches to come on Day 4 (Wednesday) of the mixed team world championship include Chinese Taipei versus Korea, Indonesia versus Denmark and Japan versus Thailand.
