The United Arab Emirates has confirmed its participation in the ice hockey tournament at the 7th Asian Winter Games in Astana-Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2011. Following the recent Chefs de Mission Seminar in Almaty, the UAE NOC’s “Gold” newsletter said the Emirates would be represented only in ice hockey with a team of 23, plus administrative, technical and medical support staff.
The UAE NOC was represented at the Seminar by Nasser Al-Gharib, Technical Director, and Ali Kdas Al Romaithi, Technical Director of the UAE Ice Hockey Federation.
The teams competing in the men’s ice hockey competition will be divided into two groups, with top teams Japan, Kazakhstan, China and the Republic of Korea in Group A and the emerging nations such as UAE, Kuwait, Hong Kong and Malaysia in Pool B. This is to avoid lopsided games and to encourage the minor hockey-playing nations.
If DPR Korea decides to enter, organisers will place them in Pool A or Pool B depending on their current world ranking.
At present there are 68 members of the International Ice Hockey Federation, the game’s ruling body.
