Gwangju, South Korea, June 9, 2019: South Korea’s key newswire, Yonhap News Agency, bought 30 million won, roughly US$24,500, worth of tickets for the 2019 FINA World Championships scheduled to take place in Gwangju in July.
The organising committee of the Gwangju world swimming championships said it has so far sold tickets valued at 3.87 billion won (around US$3.16 million), attaining 51 per cent of its sales goal of 7.5 billion won (roughly US$6.2 million).
Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop, Yonhap News CEO Cho Sung-boo and other dignitaries attended a purchase certificate delivery ceremony at Gwangju City Hall on Friday.
The biennial FINA World Championships will be held in Gwangju, 330 kilometres south of Seoul, and Yeosu, South Jeolla Province from July 12-28.
Cho said Yonhap bought tickets for the showpiece because it is not only an event for the city of Gwangju but also a global festival.
“Yonhap News will actively promote the Gwangju swimming championships in real time through its domestic and overseas networks,” Cho said.
