Singapore, May 17, 2019: Singapore’s swimming hero Joseph Schooling has described his Sportsman of the Year award for 2019 as a “great honour” following the presentation night earlier this week.
Schooling, the Olympic Games champion in the men’s 100m butterfly at Rio 2016, was named Sportsman of the Year for the sixth time in his career by the Singapore National Olympic Council after winning two gold medals at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta last August.
His golden double came in the 50m and 100m butterfly and broke the duopoly of world swimming powers China and Japan in the men’s events of the Asian Games. This outstanding display earned him the national award at the presentation night on May 14.
“Thank you Singapore National Olympic Council for this great honour and big congrats to all the other winners tonight,” he wrote on his Facebook account, which has over half a million followers.
“I couldn’t have done it alone. Thank you to each and every one of you who’ve supported me through this journey,” he added.
He ended his comment with three hashtags: #sportsawards #oneteamsg #notlettinggo, the last one showing his determination to carry on at the elite level and not letting go of his status.
