Schooling, Veloso named top athletes in Singapore

Singapore, May 15, 2019: Rio Olympic swimming champion Joseph Schooling and young sports shooter Martina Veloso won the top individual honours at the Singapore Sports Awards 2019 at Orchard Hotel on Tuesday, May 14.

Schooling, 23, the 100m butterfly champion at Rio 2016, won two gold medals at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta last August – in the 50m and 100m butterfly. Schooling was named Sportsman of the Year for the sixth time.

Veloso, who is only 19, excelled at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia, with two gold medals – in the women’s 10m air rifle and 50m air rifle prone.

Singapore's indoor skydivers were also honoured at the annual event for the first time.

Organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore (SportSG), and supported by the Tote Board group comprising Tote Board, Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club, the Singapore Sports Awards 2019 honour the most deserving individuals and teams in sports for the year 2018.

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament and President of the Singapore NOC, graced the event as the Guest of Honour to present the awards to the deserving winners.

Best Sports Event of the Year (Local) - M1 Asian Netball Championships 2018

Best Sports Event of the Year (International) - FINA Swimming World Cup Singapore 2018 Presented by Yakult

Sports Journalist of the Year - Dilenjit Singh (The New Paper)

Best Sports Photo of the Year - Lim Weixiang

Sportsboy/Sportsgirl Team of the Year (Event) - Choo Yi Xuan & Kyra Poh Indoor Skydiving – Dynamic Two-Way Team, FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving 2018

Team of the Year (Event) - Nur Azlyana Binte Ismail, Nurhanishah Binte Shahrudin, 18th World Pencak Silat Championship

Team of the Year (Team Sport) - Floorball Men’s Team

Coach of the Year - Sheik Alau’ddin Bin Yacoob Marican (Silat)

Sportsgirl of the Year - Constance Lien (Jiu-Jitsu)

Sportsboy of the Year - Muhammad Hazim Bin Mohd Yusli (Silat)

Sportswoman of the Year - Martina Lindsay P Veloso (Shooting)

Sportsman of the Year - Joseph Isaac Schooling (Swimming)
