The winter resort of Pyeongchang in Korea Republic is bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympics in high spirits after the performance of the Korean athletes in the Vancouver Games. The Korea Times reports that Pyeongchang has submitted its application file to the IOC still basking in the glory of a fifth-place finish in the Vancouver medals table with six gold, six silver and two bronze.
Highlighted by Kim Yu-Na’s bewitching performance in the women’s figure skating, the athletes’ success is set to boost the economy to the tune of several billion dollars, researchers predict. The 14-medal haul will also boost the Koreans’ bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, Pyeongchang’s third consecutive attempt after missing out to Vancouver for the 2010 Games and to Sochi for 2014.
Set deep in the highlands of Gangwon Province, 180 kilometres east of Seoul, Pyeongchang faces competition from Munich, Germany, and Annercy, France. The IOC will select the 2018 host city on July 6, 2011, in Durban, South Africa.
