Phnom Penh, Cambodia, March 24, 2019: The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Hun Sen, made the official announcement on March 21 that Cambodia will host the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in May 2023.
It will be the first time for Cambodia to organise the regional sports fest. The 30th SEA Games will be in the Philippines this November, followed by the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam in 2021.
The Prime Minister confirmed the timescale of the 32nd SEA Games, with May as the chosen month in 2023 for this momentous sports occasion.
The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) is one of the six founder members of the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in 1959. Eleven NOCs now join the SEA Games.
NOCC was officially approved as the host of the 32nd SEA Games 2023 by the SEA Games Federation in Singapore in 2015.
In order to host the event, Cambodia has constructed two indoor stadiums and an aquatics complex in the new National Sports Complex in a satellite city of Phnom Penh known as Khan Chroy Jong Va. A new 60,000-seat National Stadium is about half complete.
They also have plans to build an Athletes’ Village in the satellite city. In terms of athletes’ preparation and training, Cambodia initiated their biennial National Games in 2006. The 2nd National Games was held in 2018 with the third in 2020.
