Japan miss gold medal by 0.02 seconds

Date : 27 Feb 2010

Japan missed out on their first gold medal of the Vancouver Winter Olympics by just two-hundredths of a second in the women’s speed skating team pursuit final at Richmond Olympic Oval on Saturday. Competing for gold against Germany, Japan’s three-strong team of Masako Hozumi, Nao Kodaira and Maki Tabata led for much of the race, only to be pipped on the line by the fast-finishing Germans.

Germany’s winning time was 3 minutes, 02.82 seconds, just 0.02 seconds quicker than Japan. Poland, who had lost to Japan in the semi-finals, beat the United States to take the bronze medal in the race for third place.

It was Japan’s third silver medal of the Olympics and fifth in all, but they have yet to win a gold. In Turin 2006, Japan won only one medal – a gold in women’s figure skating from Shizuka Arakawa.
