Thailand’s strong finish earns YOG golfing gold

Date : 16 Oct 2018

Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 15, 2018: Thailand won the mixed gender golf team event at the Youth Olympic Games on Monday.

Playing at the Hurlingham Club, the Thai duo of Atthaya Thitikul and Vanchai Luangnitikul birdied the last two holes to win gold and edge out the USA, who took silver, and Argentina with bronze.

The Thai pair had been five shots behind USA with holes running out, and they believed the gold was out of reach.

“We were playing for a silver medal so didn’t feel any pressure,” admitted Luangnitikul, who diverted all praise to his teammate.

“We didn’t think about the result, she just made birdies. Playing together is just great,” continued Luangnitikul, who finished fourth in the men’s individual competition.

“We practise together a lot, we are friends.”

The Thais finished on 12-under 268 after three rounds, one stroke ahead of the USA and five clear of Argentina.
