China to add Olympic studies in schools ahead of Beijing 2022

Date : 11 Mar 2018

Beijing, China, March 9, 2018: China’s Ministry of Education has announced a plan to introduce Olympic education into China's primary and secondary school curricular ahead of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. The plan was co-issued by the Ministry of Education, the General Administration of Sport and the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

According to the plan, which was announced on February 27, Olympic education consisting of lectures, physical education courses and cultural activities will be carried out in schools across the country. The plan sets a goal to engage more students in winter sports. Schools in northern China with the necessary facilities should provide courses on winter sports. In southern China, schools are encouraged to partner with ice rinks and winter sports clubs.

In addition to courses, more intra- and inter-city competitions in winter sports will be organised for students. Olympic quiz competitions, essay and photo contests, interactions with Olympic champions and Olympic themed winter camps will be other ways of promoting the Olympic Winter Games in schools.

Students will also be encouraged to submit designs for the Beijing 2022 mascots and torch, as well as ideas for the slogan of the Games. Countdown events and the Olympic torch relay will engage as many students as possible, too, all in the hope of promoting Olympic education and the Olympic spirit in China.
