Korea boosts medal tally to 12 with 1,000m speed skating bronze

Date : 24 Feb 2018

Gangneung, Korea, February 23, 2018: Korea increased its medal tally to 12 at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics by adding a bronze in the men’s 1,000m speed skating at Gangneung Oval on Friday night. Competing in his second Winter Olympics, Kim Tae-yun finished third to win Korea’s fourth bronze medal of the games. The hosts are in ninth place in the medal table with four gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Kim, 23, was 30th in this race four years ago in Sochi but this time challenged for gold with a time of 1:08.22. Skating in the 18th and last pair of the night, the Netherlands’ Kjeld Nuis won gold in 1:07.95, just 0.04 seconds ahead of Norway’s Havard Lorentzen, who had to settle for silver with 1:07.99. Nuis added the 1,000m title to the 1,500m gold he won on Tuesday.

The Norwegian was also looking to complete a golden double after winning the 500m on Monday, only to be denied by the Dutchman with a time that dropped Kim from silver to bronze medal position. Still, the bronze medal sparked wild celebrations in the Korean camp, and Kim escaped from a team hug to take the familiar Korean flag on green pole on a lap of honour of the Gangneung Oval.
