Surprise challenger Cha beaten to gold by new Olympic record

Date : 20 Feb 2018

Gangneung, Korea, February 19, 2018: Korean speed skater Cha Min-kyu was hoping an Olympic record equaling run in the men’s 500 metres would be good enough for the gold medal at Gangneung Oval on Monday night. Then along came Norway’s Havard Lorentzen and spoilt the party, relegating Cha to the silver medal position by the narrowest of margins.

Cha, who had not been among the favourites for the title going into the race, had set the oval alight with a scintillating skate, matching the existing Olympic record of 34.42 seconds set in 2002. The Norwegian sprinter, who entered the race ranked No. 1 in the world at 500m, then bettered that by 0.01 seconds, taking the gold with a new Olympic record of 34.41.

China’s Gao Tingyu won bronze with 34.65, and a strong Japanese challenge on the night ended without a place on the podium.
