Kazakhstan’s double Olympic champion stripped of two gold medals

Date : 28 Nov 2016

Lausanne, Switzerland, November 25, 2016: The International Olympic Committee announced on Friday that seven athletes have been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 and London 2012 following re-analysis of their doping samples. They include Ilya Ilin, 28, of Kazakhstan, who won the gold medal in men’s 94kg weightlifting at Beijing 2008 and at London 2012.

Re-analysis of Ilin’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance stanozolol, and from London 2012 proved positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) and stanozolol.

The athlete’s two gold medals from Beijing and London must be returned to the IOC and the International Weightlifting Federation has been instructed to amend the results accordingly. The other six athletes named by the IOC are from Belarus (5) and Azerbaijan.
