Doha, Qatar: International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach today met with Qatar’s Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, at the Royal Palace in Doha. Sheikh Al-Thani, an IOC member and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), highlighted the vital role of sport in society and particularly the Olympic Schools Programme, which has been run successfully in Qatar for the past seven years.

President Bach praised the “many good initiatives” being undertaken in the country and also invited contributions to Olympic Agenda 2020.

The pair also discussed the 2022 FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar and its preparations. The Emir outlined a number of measures being taken by the local authorities regarding recent issues relating to the workforce and their conditions.

The IOC President also held a series of meetings with Qatari sports leaders, including the QOC Secretary General, His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, the QOC Executive Board and the presidents of the National Sports Federations.

President Bach, who was accompanied by IOC Vice President Nawal El Moutawakel, also visited an anti-doping laboratory and the Qatar Olympic Academy building. The President praised the “very impressive” laboratory facilities, which have recently received WADA accreditation for blood testing and are expected to have full accreditation within the coming months. He also heard about research being carried out into new methods for drugs testing aimed at protecting clean athletes.

The President will wrap up his three-nation visit of the Gulf in Saudi Arabia. The trip began on Saturday in Kuwait, where the President attended the 63rd ANOC Executive Council meeting.
