‘Speedy Jantan’ sprints to 100m gold

23 Aug 2017
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 22, 2017: The search for South East Asia’s fastest man ended on Tuesday night – and he was in Malaysia’s own backyard. Melaka-born Khairul Hafiz Jantan, 19, won the men’s 100 metres in 10.38 seconds at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. The Philippines’ Eric Shauwn Cray was second and Thailand's Kritsada Namsuwun third in the same time, 10.43 seconds.

"This medal is for Malaysia, for the people of Malaysia, my parents, my coaches and those who made it possible,” said Khairul, who is nicknamed “Speedy Jantan”, soon after the race. "No words can describe my happiness to win this gold for my country after a long absence. There is only so much you can do in training but The Almighty decides and blesses you for your achievements.

"I call on the people of Malaysia to pray for me in the 200m and the 4x100m relay and I strongly believe I can achieve a triple...with confidence boosted by today's success,” he added. The women’s 100m was won by Le Tu Chinh of Vietnam in 11.56s, ahead of Malaysia’s Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (11.74) and Shanti Pereira of Singapore (11.76).
