Bubka calls for female participation in sport

21 Nov 2013
Kuwait: Pole vault legend Sergey Bubka has called on all female athletes to strive hard to achieve their personal goals in their respective sports - and for wide participation among girls and young women across Asia and Africa.

The Ukrainian IOC Member, who retired from competition in 2008, represented the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991 and was twice named Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News. In 2012 he was one of 24 athletes inducted as an inaugural member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Hall of Fame for his long list of world record-breaking success at world championships and Olympic Games.

Invited by ANOC and OCA President H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, Bubka attended the first IOC Women and Sport Forum for Africa and Asia and the Olympic and Sport Education Seminar at the headquarters of OCA in Kuwait.

He expressed his appreciation and his satisfaction at the end of the three-day programme. “I’m very happy to be here because the excellent forum offers a good opportunity to all participants. It is good to hear the issues of different people coming from Africa and Asia, and of course it is nice for me to give them motivation and add value to our Olympic Movement.

“I’m really satisfied and would like to thank Sheikh Ahmad for hosting the forum in Kuwait.”

In his final message to all women, especially from Africa and Asia, to participate in sport, he said: “I’d like to call on all the girls from Africa and Asia taking part in any kind of sport activities, because participating in sport is more important for themselves. Sport can build them a strong character, create healthy lifestyle, and achieve their goals.”
