Colombo, Sri Lanka, August 28, 2017: For the first time in the history of the Sri Lankan Olympic Committee, NOC Sri Lanka organised an Inter-School Pilot Debate Programme on Olympic Educational Values named OVEP Debater 2017. As the pilot programme, 10 leading schools each from Colombo and Kandy were selected on the direction of the Ministry of Education.
After having awareness programmes in both cities, the first round for Colombo schools was held on August 1 and the second round and quarter-finals on August 3. The preliminary rounds for Kandy schools were held on August 5 and August 7.
The semi-finals between two Colombo schools - Royal College and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya - and two Kandy schools - St Anthony’s College and Mahamaya Girls’ College - were staged very competitively on August 11.
The final, between Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya and Mahamaya Girls’ College, took place on August 12 at the Rupavahini Corporation’s studio located at Open University of Sri Lanka. Mahamayavians were honoured to write their school’s name in the Sri Lankan Olympic history books by becoming the first ever winning OVEP Debaters in the OVEP Debater 2017 pilot programme. They will be offered the glorious opportunity of visiting Ancient Olympia, the birth place of Olympics.
