Japan set to announce 2020 Olympics bid

15 Jul 2011
Tokyo, Japan: Tokyo hopes a bid for the Olympic Games in 2020 will serve as a symbol of Japan’s recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the Associated Press reports from the Japanese capital. Japanese Olympic officials have scheduled a news conference for Saturday, when Tokyo’s 2020 bid will be officially revealed.

“We believe the Olympics will aid in the recovery and reconstruction of this country, and we want to help create a new Japan for the future, for our children,” Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda was quoted as saying by the Kyodo news agency at a sports symposium on Friday.

Tokyo bid for the 2016 Olympic Games but finished third in the IOC vote, behind eventual winner Rio de Janeiro, plus Madrid. Chicago was eliminated in the first round.

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami left about 23,000 people dead or missing in northeastern Japan, and the JOC has said if Tokyo secures the 2020 Games, regions affected by the earthquake, tsunami and the ensuing nuclear crisis could host some events such as football.

The IOC will select the 2020 host city in 2013.
