JOC to arrange 'mini-Olympics' for disaster-hit areas

11 Aug 2011
Tokyo, Japan: The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to stage a ''mini-Olympic Games'' in disaster-hit areas as a recovery project for the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged eastern Japan, Kyodo News reports from Tokyo. The JOC will organise about 60 events where Olympic athletes can interact with the local communities in five prefectures - Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Ibaraki - over a three-year period. The project could get under way as early as September.

''We would like to provide opportunities for children and the elderly alike to enjoy what would amount to be a kind of sports festival,'' said JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda. The JOC plans to hold a torch relay and opening ceremonies featuring the march-in processions, and have Olympic athletes hold sports seminars.

With the cooperation of the International Olympic Committee, the JOC also hopes to invite top athletes from abroad to participate in the events. Japan has announced its intention to bid for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
