Draughts makes debut at China’s National Games

12 Jul 2017
Tianjin, China, July 12, 2017: The board game Draughts made its debut at China's National Games when the event opened on Tuesday in Tianjin, Xinhua News Agency reports. A total of 96 players from 22 provincial teams are competing for six gold medals during the five-day competition.

The 96 players won tickets to the national finals after a three-month preliminary round which saw over 4,000 athletes from all over the country compete.

Draughts, also known as Checkers, is one of the most ancient games dating back 4,000 years. However, the sport only gained recognition in China a decade ago when the country's sports authorities started to promote it.
