1st OCA Coordination Committee meeting for the 2nd AYG in Nanjing.
OCA asks for expanded sports programme

18 Nov 2011
Nanjing, China: The Director General and Technical Director of the Olympic Council of Asia, Husain Al-Musallam, has asked organisers of the 2nd Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China, in 2013 to try and expand the sports programme to include more events that reflect Asian sports culture.

Organisers are planning to hold 15 sports in the 2nd AYG in August 2013, having added squash, shooting and handball to the programme put forward at the OCA General Assembly in Tokyo in July.

At the first OCA Coordination Committee meeting for the 2nd AYG in Nanjing on Friday, Captain Husain asked if further additions could be made, provided the facilities already existed and would not result in additional costs.

“These Games are related to culture, and we would like to see this reflected in the sports programme,” he said.

“The proposal for the 15 sports is acceptable, while sports such as dragon boat or Chinese chess reflect the culture of Asia.

“Then we have bowling and billiards. In bowling, most of the world champions come from Asia.

“If you have the facilities and don’t need to build new facilities, and can accommodate these sports, we would welcome them.”

The matter will be discussed by local organisers and the Chinese Olympic Committee before the final programme of sports and events is confirmed.

The 15 sports are: aquatics (swimming and diving), athletics, badminton, basketball, fencing, football, golf, handball, judo, rugby, shooting, squash, table tennis, tennis and weightlifting.
