Qatar NOC celebrates bronze medal for 400m star Haroun

11 Aug 2017
Doha, Qatar, August 10, 2017: The Qatar Olympic Committee is celebrating the performance of up-and-coming runner Abdalelah Haroun at the IAAF World Championships in London. Haroun lived up to his reputation as a young athlete of great promise by winning the bronze medal in the 400 metres.

The 20-year-old former world junior champion clocked a season’s best 44.48 seconds with a stunning late surge to finish behind defending champion Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa (43.98 seconds) and silver medallist Steve Gardiner of the Bahamas (44.41 seconds). Haroun’s personal best is 44.27 seconds.

Haroun, the first Asian world 400m medallist, commented: "The first thing I wanted to do was reach the final but in the end I have been fighting for a medal. I knew it was a big chance for me so, I am very happy to have taken the opportunity.

"It is a special moment for my country and an honour to take the bronze medal with me. It was a great race with so many stars but I was confident of success. To win a medal at the World Championships for Qatar is a dream come true,” he added.

Two years ago, Haroun won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Wuhan, China, and last year he added a silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, USA.
