Chinese dominate eSports competition at AIMAG

26 Sep 2017
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, September 26, 2017: Just as he did with the first medals before the Opening Ceremony, the OCA President, H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, had the honour of presenting some of the final medals at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games on Wednesday.

Although the last batch did not count on the official table because esports was regarded as an exhibition sport in Ashgabat, Sheikh Ahmad joined OCA Honorary Life Vice President Wei Zihong and representatives from Alisports in awarding medals to the four esports competition winners just hours before the Closing Ceremony.

Chinese athletes dominated the four different video game competitions - Dota2, Starcraft II, Hearthstone and King of Fighters - that were held over the last three days. China won gold and silver in the Dota2 team event with the Philippines taking bronze. China’s Zhou Hang and Wang Lei won gold and silver in Starcraft II while Mongolia’s Bataa Ononbat took the bronze.

China’s  Liu Bo won gold in Hearthstone with silver going to Tumenbayar Nambarjin of Mongolia and bronze to Chen Yung-He of Chinese Taipei. Lin Chia-Hung won gold in King of Fighters for Chinese Taipei, ahead of his compatriot Tseng Chia-Chen. China’s Su Haojun won the bronze medal.

The competition was intense from start to finish, with an enthusiastic crowd watching the action unfold live on the giant screens at the Indoor Athletics Arena while online followers of the booming sport were able watch live downstreams from anywhere in the world.

The OCA leadership has long been a supporter of esports, which has a massive following and participation rate among Asian youths. It had been a fully recognised medal sport at previous AIMAGs and will make its debut at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Ten National Olympic Committees featuring 56 competitors competed in Ashgabat  after advancing from qualifying events involving more than 2,000 entrants.
