NOC EB member Andrey Kryukov talks to the media after the press conference.
Almaty – ready to step up from Asian to Olympic Winter Games

20 Feb 2014
Sochi, Russia: Having hosted the 7th Asian Winter Games in 2011, Kazakhstan is now ready to welcome the world to the big one – the Olympic Winter Games in 2022. This was the message from the bidding city of Almaty, the government and the NOC at a press conference in the Main Press Centre on Thursday afternoon. The Secretary General of the NOC of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Timur Dossymbetov, said the Winter Olympics bid was part of a long-term strategy to attract major international sports events to Almaty and to the country alongside the expansion of venues and infrastructure.

Timur explained that Almaty had bid unsuccessfully for the 2014 Winter Olympics now taking place in Sochi, Russia, and that the venues had been built despite a tough economic climate at the time. “This has been our desire to be integrated into the Olympic Movement and to produce a new generation of athletes, like our bronze medal-winning figure skater here in Sochi, Denis Ten,” he said.

“The 7th Asian Winter Games in 2011 involved about 2,000 athletes and coaches in 11 sports in eight days and in 2017 we will host the Universiade. Ten of the 12 venues needed for the Olympic Winter Games in 2022 will be ready by 2017.”

The Chairman of the Agency of Physical Culture and Sport of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Tastanbek Yessentayev, said the President of the country, the national government, the city administration and the people were ready to host the Winter Olympics at a “very high level” and were united in their efforts.

Representing the city of Almaty, NOC Executive Board member Andrey Kryukov provided details of the existing winter sports facilities in Almaty and said all competition venues and non-competition venues for 2022 would be located within a 35km radius of a new Olympic Village.

With their experience of hosting major winter sports events and multi-sports events such as the Asian Winter Games in 2011, Almaty was ready to step up to the next level, he said. He also explained that there were plans for the open-air Medeo ice rink in the mountains near Almaty – where over 120 world records in speed skating have been broken since it opened in 1972 – to have a temporary or permanent roof and be used in the Winter Olympics.
