World champion Cheong dives for SEA Games gold

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 27, 2017: The second day of diving at the 29th SEA Games saw Malaysia sweep both gold medals contested at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil on Sunday. Malaysia has now picked up five gold medals and five silver medals in the competition, which ends on Wednesday.In the women’s 1m springboard event, recently crowned 10m platform world champion Cheong Jun Hoong collected 268.55 points.

Compatriot Jasmine Lai Pui Yee settled for silver with 233.00 points and Vietnam’s Ngo Phuong Mai scored 207.80 points for bronze. As for the men's 10m platform, Malaysia's Commonwealth Games champion Ooi Tze Liang amassed 442.65 points for gold with teammate Chew Yiwei second with 412.75 points. Singapore’s Jonathan Chan Fan Keng collected the bronze medal with 367.90 points.

Jun Hoong, still nursing her back injury, said she was happy to be able to contribute one gold medal for her country. "I am only entering this one event this time as my coach advised me not to further aggravate the injury and I need to slow things down for a while," said the 27-year-old Budapest 2017 world champion. "I am glad that I could help Malaysia to win one gold medal," she added.
