Bahrain NOC approves sports calendar

Manama, Bahrain: The Bahrain Olympic Committee’s sports affairs directorate has announced its calendar of events for 2014 as part of its strategy to encourage sports federations to bring different sporting events to the Kingdom. The BOC’s Acting General Secretary, Abdulrahman Askar, stressed the importance of hosting sports competitions in Bahrain in order to raise the profile of the Kingdom on the sports map as well as giving more opportunities to national teams to compete on the international stage.
Askar said the BOC was keen to implement the directives of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, to host regional, continental and global sporting events, noting his support in attracting major international competitions.
Askar also lauded the efforts of Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, General Secretary of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and Vice President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, in issues related to the hosting of any sports event. He stressed the importance of the continued cooperation between the NOC and sports federations in order to host successful championships.

*7th Bahrain Open Junior Table Tennis Championships, February 24-28
*12th Men’s and 8th GCC Women’s Festival, March 15-19
*Asian Optimist Sailing Championship, March 28-April 6
*Asian Junior Volleyball Championship, October
*GCC Checkers Championship, August 15-22
*GCC Weightlifting Championships, October
*13th GCC Swimming Championships, to be decided
*13th GCC Bowling Championships, October
*Bahrain round of the GCC Cycling Tour, December
*Al Bareh International Championship, June 19-23
The Bahrain Olympic Committee also supported the Bahrain Handball Association in hosting the 16th Asian Men’s Handball Championship, which served as a qualifier for the 2015 World Championship.
