Malaysia’s PM closes 29th SEA Games

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 30, 2017: The Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, declared the 29th SEA Games closed at Bukit Jalil Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Games, which involved over 7,000 athletes and officials from the 11 National Olympic Committees in the SEA region, opened on August 19. There were 38 sports on the programme and 404 events, with Malaysia finishing on top of the medals table.

The President of the SEA Games Federation, HRH Tunku Imran, described the 29th SEA Games as “truly magnificent, memorable and majestic”. In his speech he said: “Thank you Prime Minister for the invaluable support and assistance that you and your government have given to us.  

“We have witnessed many brilliant performances from the best athletes of the 11 countries. You have given your best efforts for your country. Please go back home with your heads high and with pride. “Also, well done Team Malaysia for winning an incredible 323 medals, including a sensational 145 gold medals.”

HRH Tunku Imran thanked the National Sports Associations, officials, team managers, coaches and technical officials for providing a “great platform” on which the athletes could excel. He also praised organising committee MASOC for overcoming a few problems and producing a final result to be proud of. “Nothing is perfect in this world,” he said.

On behalf of the IOC, Singapore’s IOC member Ng Ser Miang presented the IOC Trophy to Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, YB Brig. Gen. Khairy Jamaluddin. The SEA Games Federation flag was then passed from Malaysia to Philippines, who will host the 30th SEA Games in 2019.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco received the flag from outgoing SEA Games Federation President HRH Tunku Imran before passing it on to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who will take the lead in organising the country's first hosting since 2005.
