Malaysia NOC breaking new ground in Winter Olympics

PyeongChang, Korea, February 7, 2018: The Secretary General of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Low Beng Choo, admits people thought they were “crazy” when including winter sports in the South East Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur last August. “After all, we think it is cold in Malaysia when it is 20 C,” said Beng Choo, who was speaking on the sidelines of the 132nd IOC Session on Wednesday in her NOC capacity.

Now Malaysia can feel proud of their two Winter Olympians, as the tropical SEA country, along with neighbours Singapore, is among six NOCs making their debut at the Winter Games in Korea in a record field of 92 countries and regions.

“People thought we were crazy when we included some winter sports in the SEA Games last year, but they are proving popular with the youth, not only at the ice rinks around the region but also for those studying or living overseas.”

Figure skater Julian Yee qualified for the Winter Olympics by finishing sixth at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany last September, the month after winning the gold medal at the SEA Games ahead of the Philippines’ Sochi 2014 Olympian Michael Martinez. Julian trains full time in Ontario, Canada.

Like figure skater Julian, alpine skier Jeffrey Webb also competed at the OCA’s 8th Asian Winter Games at Sapporo a year ago.  He is a regular competitor in the USA and Canada in slalom and giant slalom. “We are delighted and proud to have two athletes representing Malaysia for the first time at the Winter Olympics,” added Beng Choo.

“It shows you the determination of the athletes and the support of their parents and federations, because winter sports is quite expensive. “The ice sports attracted big crowds at the SEA Games last year and I am sure the performances of our athletes here will be followed very closely back home.”
