Vietnam’s Little Mermaid swims to golden hat-trick

23 Aug 2017
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 22, 2017: After two days of swimming at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, Vietnam’s “Little Mermaid” Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has recorded a hat-trick of gold medals and broken two SEA Games records in the process.

On Tuesday, Anh Vien earned two gold medals, in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:13.64, breaking her own SEA Games record of 2:14.12. Later in the evening she added another gold medal in the women’s 400m freestyle.

On Monday – the first day of swimming – the 21-year-old Vietnamese star won a gold medal in the women’s 100m backstroke in a new SEA Games record of 1:01.89.

Talking with the media, she revealed a secret which helped her to be more self-confident in conquering the competition at the SEA Games: That is, she always wears an old red jacket whenever competing at the SEA Games and it has become her lucky charm.

“It was the jacket I wore when I first started competing a long time ago. It gives me confidence,” she said. Anh Vien won eight gold medals at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore in 2015 and is aiming for between eight and 10 this time.
