Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain shoot for gold in GCC Women’s Games

Manama, Bahrain: Bahrain’s Noora Sultan and Yasmine Akeel secured the bowling doubles gold medal at the 3rd GCC Women’s Games in Bahrain on Monday. Arab champion Noora, who had won the singles event the previous day, teamed up with silver medallist Yasmine to clinch the doubles with a combined total of 2,390 points. Kuwait’s Fatma Ahmed and Shaikha Al Hindi finished second with 2,029 points and Oman’s Aisha Al Sibani and Nathira Al Saeed (1,963) rounded off the podium.

The top three finishers were honoured by Bahrain Olympic Committee General Secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Games Executive Committee Chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.

In other events Monday, UAE beat Bahrain 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-18) to underline their volleyball superiority and receive the trophy from BOC Chief Executive Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa. Oman won silver and Bahrain bronze.

In another match, Kuwait edged Qatar 3-0 for their second win after two consecutive defeats. Qatar finished last with four straight losses. On the first day of shooting, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait shared the honours. Bahrain's Lulua Al Zayani, Aisha Suwaileh and Sabeeka Mubarak took the 50m air rifle team gold, followed by Qatar and UAE. 

Lulua (579.17 points) bagged Bahrain's second gold in the 50m air rifle individual, ahead of compatriot Aisha (576.24). Qatar’s Bahiya Mansoor (576.21) was third. Dana Saad (369) of Qatar came out on top in the 10m pistol against Bahraini Mouza Buchiri (370) and Hanadi Mubarak (379). In the 10m pistol team event, the Kuwaitis secured first place, ahead of Qatar and Bahrain.

Bahrain added eight medals to their tally, including two gold, on the concluding day of the athletics for the disabled championship at Khalifa Sports City. Oman dominated the javelin and grabbed gold medals through Shaikha Al Hamadi (F53-54) and Rayan Abdulla (F55).

UAE discus throwers Thuraya Al Zu'abi (F32-33-34) and Seham Al Rashidi (F56-57-58) topped their respective events, while Bahraini Zahra Abdulla (F37) won the shot put. The 200 metres rounded off the championship, with Bahrain winning all three podium places through Asma Habib (38.91 sec), Shaikha Al Haiki (42.60) and Noaf Al Kubaisi (45.03).
