32 weightlifters represent Asia at YOG

15 Jun 2010
The first Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from August 14-26 and weightlifting is one of the 26 sports in the programme for athletes aged between 14 and 18. The weightlifting competition will be held in Toa Payoh Sports Hall and the lifters will compete in 11 weight divisions from August 15-19. The weights of 48 kg girls and 56 kg boys will start the competition and it will come to an end with the 85 kg boys category.

It's remarkable that 110 girls and boys will contest the Singapore YOG weightlifting battles. Every NOC can dispatch two female and two male weightlifters to the competition. The qualifying competitions of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships were used for determining the quotas of the Asians.

In the girls event, China, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan all have two qualifiers; and Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Philippines, Malaysia, DPR Korea, Vietnam, Korea Republic and India have one.

In the boys section, Iran, China, Kazakhstan and Thailand each have two quotas, and Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and DPR Korea have one.

“So it can be said that, in total, 32 Asian girls and boys will participate in the weightlifting competition of the 2010 YOG and display their strengths against athletes from the other continents and strive for the precious medals in the 11 weight categories,” said Asian Weightlifting Federation Director Reza Gerailey.
