IOC Women and Sport Forum - African view

20 Nov 2013
Kuwait: ANOCA's fourth Vice President and Lesotho NOC President, Mrs. Mathlohang Moila-Ramoqopo, gives her views on the IOC Women and Sport Forum for Africa and Asia in Kuwait on Wednesday.

THE FORUM

There is a lot of information. We are sitting there, listening and taking part in discussions. A lot of people want to talk about many things; it shows that many women have been inspired by the forum.

Today we discussed how to form partnerships with other organisations. The message is very clear that we should build partnerships with other organisations to tackle different issues within our society. If we could use sport as a tool then we can address many other issues facing our society such as AIDS/HIV, refugees, child abuse, sexual harassment of women etc.

CHALLENGES IN AFRICA

The biggest challenge in Africa to develop female athletes is insufficient infrastructure. This stops many of our female and male athletes to train and participate in sport. Beside this, the custom of Africa is also a challenge. Girls are often considered to be thin and do all the housework, while boys have all the opportunity early in their lives to participate in different sports.

FUTURE COOPERATION WITH ASIA

I’m excited about the collaboration between ANOCA and OCA. We realise that Asia has better sports infrastructure compared to Africa. We are looking for an opportunity for an exchange programme so that we can bring athletes to train in Asia, as well our female sport administrators. Together, maybe we can produce certain procedures or policy on promoting women participating in sport at all levels by the two continental organisations.
