Bahrain NOC steps up coach development

19 Mar 2014
Manama, Bahrain: The Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) is to conduct the new High Performance Level 4 of the National Coaching Certification Programme (NCCP) in conjunction with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). It will be the first time this high-level course has been held in the Middle East. The BOC’s acting general secretary, Abdulrahman Askar, received at his office in Seef area the CAC Chief Operating Officer and International Programmes Director, Marc Schryburt, to discuss details of the programme, which will be sponsored by McDonald’s, Chevron Bahrain and Arabian Gulf Raffle.

During the meeting, which was also attended by Sports Training and Development Section head Nabeel Taha, Askar stressed the keenness of the BOC to cooperate with the CAC, especially after signing an agreement last September to continue offering quality courses to develop national coaching standards at all levels.

The new NCCP structure is based on long-term athlete development and features four levels: Community Coach (level 1), Developmental Coach (level 2), Advanced Coach (level 3) and High Performance Coach (level 4).

“Bahrain has been a leader in coach development in the GCC for 15 years,” said Schryburt, referring to the BOC partnership with CAC dating back to 1997.

“With the implementation of the new NCCP interactive programme, once again they will be a leading country.”

CAC has worked with several other sports and Olympic organisations, including Jordan, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia and Singapore, and more than 200 coaches have graduated from the NCCP in Bahrain along with 10 learning facilitators.

“The quality of the Bahraini coaches that were selected to become course leaders in the new programme is very high,” added Schryburt. “Coaches in Bahrain will be in good hands, and coaching in the country will become even more efficient.”
