Incheon, Korea: The Secretary General of the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA), Kutubuddin Ahmed, outlined his NOC’s activities on sports and the environment at a meeting of the OCA Environment Committee on Saturday. Mr Ahmed gave details of the work being undertaken to promote environmental concern in general, and the specific measures in place when the capital Dhaka hosted the 11th South Asian Games at the beginning of the year.

The general activities included promoting the concept of sport and the environment in schools through the distribution of posters and the displaying of banners; promoting the “clean and green” sports theme by visiting national sports federations with a team of “clean-up” volunteers to work in the surrounding area; taking part in TV talk shows and organising seminars, tree-planting projects around sports venues and a painting competition to promote the environment among the youth.

“In addition to this, the BOA implemented a number of green campaigns in the recently concluded 11th South Asian Games Dhaka 2010,” added Mr Ahmed.

“The NOC of Bangladesh took all possible steps to make the South Asian Games more environment-friendly.”

Games measures included the use of temporary buildings, a paper-free administration, noise pollution control featuring a “No Horn” policy around venues, Converted Natural Gas-powered vehicles and a huge team of volunteers, who planted 20,000 saplings around the venues on the completion of the Games.

“I believe that the message is very clear now and the government of Bangladesh is reacting well,” concluded Mr Ahmed.
