The 5th Winter Asian Games were held at Aomori, Japan, from February 1, (Saturday) to February 8, 2003 (Saturday). The 5th Winter Asian Games Aomori 2003 were the largest Games ever, 29 NOCs sending almost 1,200 athletes and officials to the Games, and its 51 medal events in six sports. Tens of thousands of spectators flocked to the six venues during the Games, eager for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch Olympic medalists. Athletes from seven of the NOCs won medals, host Japan reaping almost half the 153 awarded.

The mascot, Black Woodpecker, symbolizes beautiful nature and culture of Aomori prefecture.  Aomori winter Asian games organizing committee hopes that the mascot, which is full of liveliness, charm and friendliness, be the messenger that will spread the energy of sports and the joy of interaction between man and nature to the friends in Asia and all over the world.
