The West Asian
Games logo and mascot unveiled in Doha
As part of the
preparations for hosting the West Asian Games to be held in
Doha from the 1st to the 10th December 2005, the West Asian
Games Organizing Committee unveiled its logo and the official
mascot during a press conference in Doha on Tuesday 12 July
2005 and attended by His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin
Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary General of Qatar National
Olympic Committee and Director General of the West Asian Games
Organizing Committee.
During his opening
speech, His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani
stressed on the commitment of the Organizing Committee, and
QNOC, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin
Hamad Al Thani, the Heir Apparent and President of QNOC, to
successfully organize the West Asian Games.
“Hosting the Games
is another success we add to our country reflecting the
overall success Qatar has achieved so far in organising
International sporting events; thus presenting a true image to
the countries of West Asia about the capabilities of our
country under the wise leadership of His Highness the Emir
Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani”, Sheikh Saud bin
Abdulrahman Al-Thani stated.
His Excellency
Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani also stated that the 3rd
West Asian Games will welcome 1200 men and women from thirteen
countries competing in eleven different sports totaling 116
competitions and events. The total number of participants
including teams’ officials, technical delegates and officials
in addition to the media and Asian federations’
representatives is estimated to reach to 4800 people.
During the press
conference, His Excellency Sheikh Saud unveiled the design of
the Games’ logo and the official mascot of the West Asian
Games. The logo consists of an artistic figure of an athlete
crossing the finish line as a symbol of fair competition;
while the mascot is the famous seagull, named “Slaily”.

Games
The West Asian
Games aims to promote friendship, understanding and peace in
the region and take active measures in order to increase the
Olympic movement through its motto of “Faith, Health and
development.”
The West Asian
Games are held every four years as a predecessor to the Asian
Games and involve 13 member countries of West Asia.
The Third West
Asian Games is expected to be the largest in terms of number
of countries and athletes. It will also be the first West
Asian Games to welcome women as participants.
Qatar and the West
Asian Games
The people of
Qatar and its capital Doha want to stage a memorable West
Asian Games in the spirit of peace and friendship.
The Games will act
as a platform for educating the youth on the importance of
sport to all sectors of society and building cultural links
through sports. Through the Games, Qatar hopes to show the
world, the unique talents of the nation and its ability to
stage such events.
The 3rd West Asian
Games come one year before Doha hosts the 15th Asian Games
Doha 2006 and the success of these Games will further
highlight Doha’s credibility as being the sports hub of Asia.
